Tagging a Trip on Flickr

One of the things that came up during the Tagging Panel Discussion at Etech is what happens when people use tags like "New York" or "London" because they're part of their trip, rather than because they're of the city, and how this can get in the way when you're trying to find photos of London or New York.

As Stewart pointed out, tags are a personal thing - it's just a happy coincidence they normally work on a global level. So this isn't really a problem, but it still bothers me, mostly because pictures of my packing and our flight were showing up in the aggregated view of etech last week, which didn't seem right.

Things is, there's an easy solution. You're trying to tag the trip, not the city or conference, and tagging it accordingly ("London Trip" rather than "London") neatly sidesteps the issue. So all my photos that actually illustrate last weeks conference are now tagged "etech05", and the photos of the wider trip to California are tagged "etech05 trip".

I wouldn't want to mandate that anyone else follows this distinction, because it's missing the point of tagging (and wouldn't work anyway). But its useful enough for me to mention here.
